IT4IT Version 3.0: A New Era for Managing IT (Part -2)

Updates to the Functional Components

In IT4IT Version 2.1, the framework was organized around four value streams:

  • Strategy to Portfolio
  • Requirement to Deploy
  • Request to Fulfill
  • Detect to Correct

Each of these streams also served as a grouping for the functional components. With Version 3, these groupings are still preserved, but they are no longer referred to as “value streams.” Instead, they are treated as functional groups, each modernized to reflect today’s IT practices.

Strategy to Portfolio → Strengthened with Strategy

This group now includes a dedicated Strategy functional component, making it clearer how strategy, architecture, and digital products connect. It ensures that business goals and IT delivery are aligned from the very start.

Requirement to Deploy → Upgraded for Agile & DevOps

This group has been significantly modernized to match Agile and DevOps ways of working. Data objects and functional components have been renamed to reflect the terminology that product owners, engineers, and scrum teams use every day, making the model easier to adopt in real-world delivery environments.

Request to Fulfill → Expanded for Modern Consumption

Two big changes shape this group in Version 3:

  • Change Management has moved here from Detect to Correct, recognizing that change is a delivery activity rather than just an operational fix.
  • Identity Management has been introduced, along with a clearer definition of Service Offer Catalogs and Consumption Experiences — helping IT better represent how users actually engage with digital products.
IT Financial Management → Stronger Support Functions

The framework also strengthens its treatment of Financial Management. IT4IT now provides clearer guidance on how financial capabilities impact core functions and data objects across the Digital Value Network, ensuring costs and investments are fully visible and better aligned with digital product management.

The IT4IT Standard, Version 3.0, is not just an update, it’s a reinvention. It reflects the reality that digital products are the lifeblood of modern organizations, and they must be managed with the same rigor, clarity, and customer focus as any product in the physical world.

From the introduction of Digital Products and the Product Backbone to the redefinition of value streams and modernization of supporting functions, this version is designed to help IT leaders deliver value at scale with transparency, agility, and confidence.

It’s not about managing IT in the old way. It’s about managing digital in the new way.
